Most wardrobe apps want to do everything: organize your closet, plan outfits, track what you wear, sell you a few new things, and connect you with thousands of other people doing the same. Whering does most of that, and does it well. Tonee deliberately doesn’t.
That’s the whole comparison in two sentences. But you’re here for the details, so let’s be straight with you first: we make Tonee. We’ve kept this as fair as we can, and there are people we’d send to Whering instead of us — we’ll tell you exactly who.
The 30-second version
Whering is a free, social digital closet with a built-in shop for second-hand and independent brands. It’s mature, polished, and genuinely free to start — nearly ten million people use it. Tonee is smaller, private, iOS-only, and built around a single moment: open it, get an outfit from clothes you already own, matched to today’s weather, and get out the door. No feed, no shop, no rabbit holes.
If you love browsing, sharing, and discovering, Whering will feel like home. If your real problem is standing in front of a full closet at 8am with “nothing to wear,” that’s the problem we built Tonee for.
What Whering gets right (and we mean it)
It would be easy to write a comparison where we win every row. That’s not honest, so here’s where Whering is genuinely the stronger choice:
- It’s free for a whole closet. You can digitize hundreds of items without paying. Tonee’s free tier stops at 20. If cataloging a big wardrobe for free is the priority, Whering wins outright.
- Adding clothes is fast. Paste a link from almost any retailer, or pull from a database of 100M+ items, instead of photographing everything yourself.
- There’s a community. You can browse friends’ wardrobes, wishlists, and moodboards. Tonee has nothing like this — if styling is social for you, that’s a real reason to pick Whering.
- It’s on Android. Tonee isn’t, yet. For a lot of people that ends the comparison right here, and that’s fair.
Where Tonee is different
Tonee isn’t a smaller Whering. It’s a different bet about what the app is for.
- No shopping. Ever. No shop tab, no ads, no affiliate links. Every outfit is built only from clothes you already own. That’s a position, not a missing feature.
- Weather is on by default. Every suggestion already factors in today’s forecast. Whering’s “W Pick” does this too, but caps you at six suggestions a day; Tonee doesn’t cap it.
- You talk to it in plain words. Instead of a shuffle button, say “make it more formal” or “swap the jacket for something lighter,” and it reworks the outfit. Whering’s “Dress Me” shuffles at random, and reviewers regularly complain it pairs two tops or clashing prints.
- It’s built for one moment. The morning “what do I wear?” Tonee is a decision tool, not a hobby you tend.
- Color analysis is included. A seasonal color reading (armocromia) from a selfie, free, to steer suggestions toward shades that suit you.

Free vs free: read the fine print
Both apps say “free,” and both mean something slightly different by it.
Whering started life as “100% free,” and the core closet still is. But through 2025 and 2026 it added credit packs (roughly $2.99 to $12.99), a separate paid Outfit Maker, and a daily cap of six AI suggestions. It’s free in the way a generous free tier is free — with paid extras layered on top.
Tonee’s free tier is 20 items, 5 outfit suggestions, and color analysis, no card required. Unlimited is one price: $3.99 a month, or $29.99 a year — about $2.50 a month. No credits, no consumables, no “buy more generations.”
If “free forever for a big closet” is what matters most, Whering is the better deal today. If you’d rather pay once a year and never see a credit pack, that’s us.
The shopping question (this is the real fork)
Here’s the difference that actually decides it for most people.
Whering is, more and more, a discovery platform. There’s a Shop tab with second-hand pieces, independent brands, and rental, plus a daily edit. If you enjoy finding your next thing, that’s a feature, not a flaw.
Tonee makes the opposite bet. Most people wear about 20% of what they own. The fastest win usually isn’t buying more — it’s rediscovering the 80% you forgot you had. So we left shopping out on purpose. Some people will find that limiting. Others have been waiting for exactly that.
So which one should you get?
There’s no single winner here, because these aren’t really the same product.
